Impact: As a result of the community school approach, MYCF staff and providers will work collaboratively to:
1) Improve young people’s readiness for college and leadership as evidenced by an increase in meeting college readiness milestones (A-G requirements, entrance exams, etc.), completion of leadership development activities, and self-report of increased college readiness and leadership development skills.
2) Increase parent connection to their children’s college readiness, leadership development and personal growth so that 60% of senior parents will participate in 3 or more college readiness events per year and 30% of freshmen, sophomore, and junior parents will participate in 3 or more college readiness and/or leadership development events per year. 75% of parents who participate will report that the events increased their connection to their children’s education.
3) Further develop partnerships and systems to support effective community school collaboration as evidenced by progress toward youth outcomes, increased #’s of referrals between providers, and enhanced communication and connection between school day and after school activities. |
History of McClymonds Youth and Family Center:
In the late 1990’s, the West Oakland Initiative (originally known as the 7th Street McClymonds Corridor Initiative and then the 7th Street McClymonds Neighborhood Improvement Initiative) was established as a joint project of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and The San Francisco Foundation to support health and education in West Oakland. Upon the restructuring of the initiative in early 2001, the West Oakland Initiative refocused its efforts on advancing a comprehensive community school approach that brought together public health, education, and youth development at McClymonds High School and the schools that grew from McClymonds (now BEST and EXCEL). The MYFC continues today as an innovative collaborative of nonprofit school-linked support service providers anchored by the Chappell Hayes Health Center. The MYFC philosophy is “that all students can and will learn,” and that school will provide students with academic and social skills for successful experiences in secondary and postsecondary education, career exploration opportunities and involvement in community services. In 2009, OUSD brought in Alternatives in Action to serve as the fiscal agent and program lead agency in collaboration with MYFC. |
